Black River Peak (828m)
The Black River peak, also called Piton de la Riviere Noire is the highest point in Mauritius with its 828 meters height. Your English-speaking guide will be happy to take you to its top. From there, you have a magnificent view over the largest part of the island, a direct view of Le Morne, the Mare aux Vacoas reservoir, the statues near Grand Bassin and the north and northwest mountain ranges including Rempart and Trois Mamelles as well as the mountain range of Port Louis.
Although it is the highest point of the island, it is also the easiest of all the mountains to climb because we can start from a parking lot at 650 meters. We then walk for about 1.5 hr over a fairly sheltered path in the middle of guava bushes. From there, we need to climb some 100 meters with an available rope. This path can be quite muddy after a heavy rain.
If you want a tougher climb, you can start from Chamarel over the Black River Ridge Trail, which has a difference of 500 meters in altitude and requires some climbing during the approximately two and a half hour hike. The route is mostly through forests and therefore in pleasantly cool shadow – which is specially welcome in the warmer season. The view to the north, Chamarel and the south is really fabulous. If you have booked your transport with us, we offer the possibility to walk through the above mentioned trail to the Gorges Viewpoint where the driver can pick you up. This has the advantage that you do not have to climb down the steep passages again and enjoy the great view from the Gorges Viewpoint.
