Kayaking Ile D'Ambre

Ile D’Ambre : a treasure full of biodiversity and history, only a stone’s away from the northeast coast of Mauritius. One of the last wild protected areas in the country - with its dense mangroves, the island is ideal for kayaking and as well to inform about its important role in the fragile marine ecosystem. The journey begins with an introduction to kayaking and some safety measures. The group has to paddle on approximately 300 meters to reach the mangroves. Narrow passages will guide you through the ecosystem. You can stop and snorkel in the mangroves to watch the roots and young fish that live here to protect themselves from bigger fish. The journey continues to a pier where the qualified kayaking instructors / guides will take you on a small walk across the island to some ruins dating back to 1750, while you will learn about the history of the island. As soon as the small walk is over, the group will either paddle back to the mainland or in another half hour to the island of Bernaches, where a white sandy beach is waiting for them to have a good refreshing bath and a great picnic.

After lunch, the group climbs back into its two-seater sea kayaks and paddles back to the mainland over a wide turquoise-blue bay. The total distance from paddling is about 7 km, most of which is protected and goes through calm waters, with the exception of 300 metres and 100 metres, through which some wind may arise depending on the weather
